Election day observations

The line was long to vote this morning. Took me about an hour. But it's not like we weren't warned. So, naturally, people struck up conversations with their neighbors while waiting. The guy in front of me offered this media criticism: The media are always putting a negative spin on a positive thing. Voting is a positive, yet the stories we've heard leading up to the election today have all been "hurry up and vote," "be prepared for long lines," "long ballot." He wondered why we haven't seen stories emphasizing that despite the lines, the process is going smoothly. He didn't know I worked for a newspaper. The guy behind me wondered why places like Six Flags and DisneyWorld can process thousands of people through rides smoothly and relatively quickly but that voting can take an hour. So I suggested that maybe the election commission should adopt the themepark reservation system. You go online to the election commission and reserve your spot in line to vote. Voters with a good voting record (you have faithfully voted in every election over the past two years) would get priority treatment. It would encourage voting and maybe cut down on lines. The other way to cut the wait: Get younger poll workers. There wasn't a soul under 75 at my poll station, and they were slooooooooooow. I sort of glared at the new Diebold machines when I first saw them because I'm well aware of all the problems associated with those machines. There are some serious security flaws that haven't been fully investigated. But once I started voting, I was completely wowed by the technology. Voting was cool!

Well, gawd hep you because you just walked straight into a voting rant from me. I have several issues. I'll begin with the 3rd-world-style voting fraud that took place in my very own neighborhood last time we voted for the neighborhood association president. WELL, believe it or not, but the little nazi incumbent's very own husband was working the voting booth. Is this not illegal? I mean, seriously. The results were hotly contested and there was a re-count or a re-vote, I can't remember which bc I was out of town. I despise the current pres. She's British, which pisses me off, because she is not the least bit concerned with preserving the southern historical vibe of our hood, and wants to incourage the rise of property values and a very look-but-dont-touch approach to the neighborhood parks. Lady, it is my god-given right as an American to play with my dog in the park.

Issue number two. Our primaries. We actually had a guy running (dem) for state attorney general advocating public hangings for illegal immigrants. And he received 160,000 votes! thank god it was only the primaries.. the democratic party tried to get him off the ballot before the voting, but couldn't do it in time.

item number three... i think you should check in with the Rock the Vote people on your ideas for cutting down lines. I personally have always liked the lines because i get a kick out of what people talk about and i always see some cool neighbor to talk to, PLUS, and i've saved the best for last here, my voting station is at the fire station, and there's lots of hot fireman to look at while i wait.

I missed the long lines and waiting in line by going to the poles during the early voting period. I am so proud of you Ta for voting! It shows you care about who is running to run our government, be it city, county, state, or federal. There are entirely too many people out there who DO NOT care about voting! Looks like the whole family got out there and cast their votes! Way to go! I have to agree with your Mom, looks like Melissa had herself a good ole Southern Hissy Fit!! Anyway, enjoy your blog and look forward to reading it every day! Keep up the good work!
