Regarding my last post, I direct you all to this article posted on Slate.com just this morning. So there.

It's the second full week of school, and we are all still trying to get our bearings. What's working: Jesse getting himself ready in the morning, SkooterPie getting up before me in the morning, getting to school/work on time. What's not working so well: homework time. We bought Jesse his own alarm clock, and he's been doing really well getting up on his own and getting himself dressed and even getting his own breakfast a lot the time. We had one day in the first week where SkooterPie's alarm didn't wake him up, which resulted in a stressful morning.

But the homework, man, the homework. It's not even that there's a lot of homework per se, but it's still taking a long time to get it done. Contributing factors include: Jesse's not doing his homework during study time at Lindenwood, I don't get home with Jesse until almost 6 p.m., Jesse's ADHD medication has worn off by the time he does start his homework. Now that Jesse's in third grade, he pretty much has free rein at Lindenwood. The first and second graders are kept together, and there's a designated time to do homework. But this year it's up to Jesse to take the initiative to go to the study room and do his work. Which is a little like saying that it's up to Jesse to take the initiative to brush his teeth, if you know what I mean. I'm trying to get the point across to him that if he does the work at Lindenwood, he will have time to play with his neighborhood friends when he gets home. But that's not working, and something has to change.

Last night Jesse had a grammar worksheet and a spelling exercise for homework, and I needed to quiz him on his weekly spelling words. In addition to that, he had to study for a science test and do his nightly reading assignment. It took him an hour to do the first three things because he can't focus at all that time of the day. Then we took a break, and I made some dinner, and we reconvened at 8 to finish the rest. I was lucky to get him in bed by 9. So SkooterPie is going to maybe start picking Jesse up earlier from Lindenwood three days a week, which I think is a good plan. Because we are all really stressed right now.
