When I'm feeling under the weather, Jesse turns into the sweetest, most helpful kid on the planet. And I marvel at what a great kid he is. And then later that night when I give him a bowl of potato soup I've made, he complains that there are too many potatoes in it, and I want to pinch his little head off. "It's potato soup," I tell him. "Potatoes are the main ingredient. You've eaten baked potato. You like french fries. It's the same thing." "But french fries have bread on them," he counters. And all I can do is look at him and blink because huh? "No they don't. That's not bread. It's the part of the potato that's been exposed to the cooking oil, so it's crispier than the rest." And now he's confused. So I give him a slice of chocolate cake so that I can finally eat my now-lukewarm soup. I see him in my bedroom later bouncing around and I ask if he's finished with his dessert. He's not, so I tell him to please sit down while he's eating so he doesn't get crumbs all over my bedroom. But he can't control himself. "Go to the bathroom, Jesse. You obviously have to pee." "No I don't. I'm just dancing around because the cake is so good." And suddenly I'm laughing at him. Later I'm sitting in the living room, and he yells at me from my bedroom: "Mom! I'm making your bed!" "OK. You're not covering those sheets up over cake crumbs are you?" And he acts all indignant with me. "Mom, I would never do that." Then he runs to his room and cleans it and finds me in the living room to tell me about these unsolicited chores. "You want paid, right?" I ask him. He grins at me. "I'll give you a dollar." "But I made your bed and my bed." "That's wonderful. I'll give you a dollar." Later that night when I pull back the covers to go to bed, there are cake crumbs under the sheets.
