On Tigers and Doves

A conversation with Nana:

"How's that team doing that Jesse like so much? Is it the Redbirds?"
"Basketball team?"
"Yes."
"The Tigers. They lost last night."
"Well ain't that a pity. Oh, the prettiest little morning dove just landed on my porch. You know they mate for life."

Yes, there are more important things than a national championship. But it hurt to see my guys go down so badly. It still hurts. Nana's quick assessment and dismissal of the situation made me smile. No, I didn't know morning doves mated for life. It's always a good idea to talk to people who care about the really important things and can teach you something about them.

You are probably right, and I'm glad I didn't know that, because that changes the whole tone of the conversation, and I really needed that little inspirational moment to get me out of my funk.
